Cricket's three formats and Bangladesh's favourite tournaments

In Bangladesh cricket is more than a sport — it is a passion. At vp you can channel that passion into betting across three main formats. Each format has its own pace, strategy and betting opportunities.

Format Features Popular Tournaments
T20 20 overs, fast-paced, more opportunities for runs and wickets BPL, IPL, T20 World Cup
ODI 50 overs, balanced strategy, moderate turnover ICC World Cup, Asia Cup
Test Five-day match, a test of patience and strategy ICC Test Series, rivalry series

BPL is Bangladesh's own T20 league — local stars play here and fans directly support their teams. Bangladeshi cricket fans also actively bet on IPL and ICC international tournaments.

Alongside cricket, vp also offers betting on football and other sports. Cricket and football betting work a little differently — cricket has toss, wicket and over-based markets that football does not. For full details on sports betting, see our sports betting guide.

Popular betting markets — how each one works

Cricket betting is not limited to just 'who will win' — dozens of markets are open for every match. The seven most common markets are explained briefly below.

Match Winner

Pick which of the two teams will win. In limited-overs matches there is no draw — only team A or team B. The simplest and most popular market.

Popular

Toss Winner

Bet on the toss result before the match starts. Will team A or team B win the toss — a pure 50-50 chance. A good choice if you prefer quick results.

Quick result

Top Batsman

Which batter will score the most runs in an innings or the full match. This market is available both within a specific team and across all teams.

Team-based

Total Runs Over/Under

The bookmaker sets a specific run total — for example, team A's runs in the first powerplay at 45. If you think it will be more, choose 'over'; if less, choose 'under'.

Over/Under

Multi Bet

Combine the outcomes of multiple matches or markets into a single bet. If all selections are correct, the odds multiply and the payout increases — but if even one is wrong, the entire bet is lost.

High return

Man of the Match

Pick in advance which player will be named the best performer at the end of the match. The award can go to a standout batter, bowler or fielder.

Special market

Handicap Betting

The stronger team is given a run or wicket deficit to level the contest. For example, if team A is given a −15 run handicap, they start with 15 fewer runs for betting purposes. This affects only the betting calculation, not the actual score.

Next Wicket Market

How will the next wicket fall — bowled, caught, run out or LBW? In live markets you can place small bets on these moment-to-moment outcomes. Every over brings a new opportunity.

How to read odds — three formats explained simply

Odds on a betting site can be shown in three ways — decimal, fractional and American. All three represent the same probability, just written differently. Real examples are used below to explain each one.

Example 1 — the same odds in three formats

Betting ৳200 on team A to win: decimal 2.50 = fractional 3/2 = American +150. If you win, total return is ৳500 — ৳300 profit plus your ৳200 stake. If you lose, the full ৳200 is gone.

Example 2 — odds for the favourite

If team B is the favourite, odds might be: decimal 1.80 = fractional 4/5 = American -125. American minus odds show how much you need to stake to win ৳100. On a ৳200 bet, a win returns ৳360 (৳160 profit).

Decimal odds are the most straightforward — multiply the number by your stake to get your total return. Fractional odds are traditionally used in British cricket, while the American format is common on US-facing sites.

Live Betting — odds shift over by over

Betting continues after the match has started — this is in-play or live betting. Odds update instantly with every wicket, big six or change in run rate.

Example: if team A loses two wickets in the first powerplay, their odds of winning lengthen (meaning it has become harder for them to win) and team B's odds shorten. This creates an opportunity to adjust your bets at that moment.

In a T20 match, when there is heavy demand in the final over or a super over becomes possible, odds can shift significantly. In live betting you need to decide quickly — markets can lock within seconds.

For those trying in-play betting for the first time: start with small amounts and focus on enjoying the whole match. Betting is one form of entertainment, not a guaranteed way to make money.

  • Following the live score while you bet makes it easier to read the situation.
  • Odds change fastest in the death overs (16–20).
  • Set a fixed budget before you start betting and do not go beyond it.

Some useful tips for cricket betting

Cricket betting is not purely about luck — understanding match context, pitch conditions, team composition and format helps you bet more thoughtfully. That said, always approach betting as entertainment.

  • Start with one market: Get comfortable with the match winner market first, then move on to more involved markets like total runs or top batsman.
  • Set your budget upfront: Decide how much you will spend in each session before you start and stick to that limit.
  • Be careful with multi bets: If even one of three selections is wrong you lose the entire bet — multi bets are appealing but carry higher risk.
  • Consider the pitch conditions: On a spin-friendly pitch the chances of a high-scoring match are lower — useful to keep in mind for total runs markets.
  • Play responsibly: Betting is an adult (21+) form of entertainment — increasing your bets to recover losses is not a solution. Read our responsible gaming guidelines for more.
  • Know the rules: Read the terms and conditions carefully before you start betting so there are no surprises later.

Common questions — cricket betting

T20 is the easiest for beginners because a match finishes in just 3–4 hours and results come quickly. ODI betting takes longer but offers more markets. In Test matches a lot can change over five days, making it comparatively more complex.

In a multi bet you win only if every selection is correct. If even one of the three is wrong, you lose the entire bet. Example: three selections with decimal odds of 1.40, 1.50 and 1.70 give combined odds of 1.40 × 1.50 × 1.70 = 3.57 (approximately). A ৳100 bet returns ৳357 if all win; if any one loses, the full ৳100 is gone.

In live betting the bookmaker recalculates probabilities as on-field events unfold. When a wicket falls or a big six is hit, the winning chances of both teams shift, so odds update instantly. This change is most noticeable in the final overs of a T20.

Yes, the core markets are largely the same — match winner, toss, top batsman, total runs over/under. However, because IPL is a larger international tournament it may offer more markets. Many bettors prefer BPL because of their familiarity with the local teams.

The bookmaker sets a specific run line — for example, team A's total innings runs at 160. If the score is exactly 160 it is generally treated as a 'push' and the bet is refunded (subject to the site's rules). 159 or fewer means under wins; 161 or more means over wins.
